Southampton City Council has completed its major £5.8m project to improve journey times on the A3024 Bursledon Road.
The project is one of the most ambitious carried out by the council to date, delivering upgrades to traffic signals at 11 junctions between Botley Road and Bitterne Road East.
The new signals have been coordinated to facilitate more reliable journey times for people along this major road. They also include new technology which provides additional priority for buses. This works by allowing buses to communicate their routes and locations so that, as they approach the signals, the lights are held on green for longer. The signal improvements will contribute to more reliable and convenient bus travel while also reducing delays and congestion for people travelling by car along this important route.
As part of the project, the footways along the north side of Bursledon Road have also been widened to create a segregated footway/cycleway. This forms part of the SCN3 Eastern Cycle Freeway and provides another key section of the Southampton Cycle Network.
The scheme has been funded by central Government through the National Productivity Fund and Transforming Cities Fund Tranche 1, with additional funding from Southampton City Council’s Local Transport Plan.
Councillor Jacqui Rayment, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Place and Transport, says: “We are really pleased to have completed the Bursledon Road project on time and in budget. The Bursledon Road project will enable residents and commuters travelling along this road to enjoy more reliable journey times. We also invested in sustainable travel on the route, making bus travel and cycling more attractive, reliable and realistic options for people. We are confident that this will encourage more people to travel this way.”
